Liverpool are lining up a move to sign Roma’s Italy International Alberto Aquilani in a £17m deal as the Reds seek to replace Real Madrid bound Xabi Alonso.
25 year-old Aquilani has made just 11 appearances for the Italian National side since making his debut way back in 2006. However, with the likes of Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, and Francesco Totti above Aquilani in the pecking order, it is easy to see why.
The 6ft1in Midfielder made his Roma debut back in 2003 and has been held in high regard by the club ever since. In 2001 he turned down offers from both Arsenal, and Chelsea in order to play for his beloved Roma, a city in which he was born. He was nurtured under current England boss Fabio Capello before making the break into the First Team as a regular during the 2004-05 season.
Aquilani is considered to be an excellent passer of the ball, a la Alonso, and should he make the move to Anfield, will fit straight into Benitez’s plans. It’s an exciting prospect for Liverpool fans, as the only other big money signing to have arrived on Merseyside this summer was Glen Johnson from Portsmouth. If Liverpool are to challenge for the Premier League title this season, money needs to be spent on players like Aquilani.
Aquilani won’t be the only Italian at Liverpool, with Andrea Dossena and on-loan ‘keeper Danielle Padelli also on the cards. So if he does make the move, he should fit into Liverpool life pretty well, although I’m not quite sure about the standard of Bella Italia’s in the Liverpool area.
